Steering Committee

The Western Newfoundland Oil and Gas Steering Committee is an initiative of the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade established in the fall of 2007 in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources’ request for a partnership to assist with the report study on the Infrastructure, Supply & Services, and Business Opportunities for a Western Newfoundland Oil and Gas Industry.  The final report was released by Minister Ross Wiseman at a January 25, 2010 Board of Trade Luncheon in Corner Brook.  A copy of Government’s news release and downloadable report may be found at:  http://www.releases.gov.nl.ca/releases/2010/nr/0125n05.htm

Mandate:

The WNL Oil and Gas Steering Committee’s mandate continues to be to promote the prospectivity and potential of the Western Newfoundland oil and gas industry to government, investors, oil and gas companies, researchers, media and the business community locally and internationally.

The Steering Committee’s  objectives are to:

1. inform and educate the business community and public;
2. enhance marketing of the industry;
3. grow the geology/geoscience knowledge base and presence.

Steering Committee Members:

The Steering Committee represents an expanded membership from what was originally only Corner Brook members prior to the fall of 2007 to representation from key stakeholders of the Western Newfoundland oil and gas industry adjacent to the resource – from Bay St. George region to Parsons Pond. Members represent Chambers of Commerce, Regional Economic Development Boards, funding agencies and other key stakeholders in Western Newfoundland directly adjacent to the resource. 

Currently, the Committee is expanding membership once again to include representatives of Chambers of Commerce and Zone Boards in the north and south tips of Western Newfoundland.
